R. Sarath

R. Sarath is a journalist turned filmmaker. Seven years, he spent with a leading Malayalam News Weekly, Kalakaumudi. He started his film career as a documentary filmmaker. He got a junior fellowship from Department of Culture, Government of India for his research on the Murals. During the filming of 'The Painted Epics' he found out some rare mural paintings of Raja Ravi Varma from his family temple, which was not yet exposed, to the public. This finding has been a landmark in the history of Ravi Varma paintings and was a turn to Sarath's career as an innovative documentarian and filmmaker. Gaining experiences as a short filmmaker, he turned into the feature filmmaking.

His debut film Sayahnam got the Indira Gandhi National Award 2000 for the first best film by a director. Besides this, it has bagged seven state awards- best film, best actor, best art director, best editor, best singer and best dubbing, from the Kerala Government in 2000.
